Happy Halloween

Tonight is the night all the little ghosts, goblins, and ghouls come out. They roam the streets scaring people and asking for candy.

Kids love Halloween! They could walk the neighborhood for hours searching for candy, but unfortunately all parents don't have Athletic Trainer Jobs and don't want to walk for hours. A great idea is to wear comfortable shoes such as sneakers while taking your children out trick or treating. Some other great hints for trick or treating is dressing your kid in layers to ensure they stay warm in their costume and adding reflection to a costume to help drivers identify trick-or-treaters at night.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Tim Hortons Hot & Hearty Beef Lasagna Casserole

As mothers our days are always busy. We have errands to run, bills to pay, groceries to get, carpooling to do, and so many other things. This time of year is even more hectic. Halloween is only a few days away. We have decorations to buy, candy to get for trick or treaters, and costumes to get for our children. What's even more scary than Halloween is that Christmas is just right around the corner so that means we are starting our Christmas shopping as well. It's almost November and that means the weather is getting very chilly out. Winter coats, hats, and mittens are a common sight now.

Because we are so busy doing all this running around it often means lunch on the run. Greasy burgers and fries just don't cut it any more. They are so unhealthy for you and often leave you feeling blah after eating them. We often decide to look for a healthier option. Sure a salad is great, but because it's so chilly outside we want something hot. Tim Hortons has come to the rescue. They now offer a Beef Lasagna Casserole on their menu. Not only is it hot and hearty, but it's also healthy. A small Beef Lasagna Casserole is only 280 calories and contains vitamin A, C, calcium, and iron.

How does it taste though? I recently went and tried the Beef Lasagna Casserole and it's really good! It's made with ricotta cheese, basil and oregano in a tasty tomato sauce and served with garlic toast. I got a large and I couldn't finish it because it's so fulling, but I was so impressed with it I got an order to take home to my husband. He loved it as well! Another great thing about it is the price. I was able to get a coffee, the Beef Lasagna Casserole, and two donuts for under $8. When was the last time you had a hot, hearty, and healthy lunch for under $8?

The Beef Lasagna Casserole is now available at participating Canadian Tim Hortons restaurants for a limited time.

Halloween And Dental Health

Our children's dental health is very important. Tooth decay is still recognized as the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States, and with 51 million school hours lost each year due to dental-related illnesses, it’s important to teach children the importance of maintaining good oral health, especially with Halloween less a week away.

I recently asked Dr. Jennifer Salzer, a dentist, orthodontist and mother of four for some advice about Halloween and children's dental health.

Are there any candies or types of candy that are far worse for teeth than others?

Most people think that sticky candies are the worst, since they stay stuck to the teeth. It has been discovered, however, that cake, cookies and crackers can be just as harmful since they are not as quickly broken down by the saliva and can remain in contact with the tooth for longer. Therefore, I treat all candies and snacks the same: eat quickly, and brush as soon as possible!

Do you have any tips for encouraging independence in children's oral care routines?

I believe the best way to help children develop better brushing habits is to instill a routine at an early age. My favorite way to keep my kids on track with their oral care is to create a “morning routine” checklist for them to follow each day. It features all the steps they need to take in the morning to get ready for school including brushing, flossing, making the bed and more. At the end of every month the one with the most check marks receives a small prize. It is a great way to help your children take responsibility for their oral care with minimal prodding from you.

Is there a "best" toothpaste for kids?

Starting at the age of two, children should use a fluoridated toothpaste, like Oral-B Stages Toothpaste, to help prevent decay as their teeth continue to develop – it comes in a variety of flavors and characters that my children love. For kids 8 and up, I recommend the Crest Pro-Health FOR ME Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste because it is designed especially for tweens with a flavor and packaging made just for them.

Is it more important for kids to brush after they get up or after they have breakfast?

Brushing in the morning, whether before or after breakfast, is important because it helps get rid of the plaque that builds up overnight. Brushing after breakfast may be a better option because any bits of food will be removed. Some parents find it easier to have their children brush before breakfast that way they don’t get distracted and miss brushing in the rush out the door. However, I have my kids brush after breakfast, especially because they sometimes have syrup, sugary cereal, and all carbohydrate filled breakfasts that are just as bad as candy when sitting on the teeth all morning!

Halloween Cutout Cookies

Halloween is quickly approaching and that means Halloween parties for your kids at school. Here is a great recipe for cutout cookies that can be used as ghost, bats, witches, or pumpkins for a Halloween party.

Cut Out Cookies
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
1 cup margarine
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond extract

Cream well together. Then add...

2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cream of tartar

Mix well together and chill at least 3 hours in fridge to overnight.

Roll out dough and cut out in shapes. Bake at 350 degrees for about 7 minutes. Decorate with icing.

I cooked these ones in my Black & Deck countertop convention oven as a low cost energy option, but you can cook them in a regular oven as well.

Homemade Angry Bird Costume

My son desperately wanted to be an Angry Bird, the popular smartphone video game. After going to every store that sells Halloween costumes in my town I came up empty. As I was picking up a converter digitalcable I noticed the store beside it was a fabric store and I thought to myself why don't I just make him an Angry Bird costume then.

I found these instructions on how to make a homemade Angry Bird costume and in a couple of days I whipped up this. I changed the instructions a little bit, but basically they are pretty much the same. Now I have a happy little boy with an Angry Bird costume.

Halloween Safety Tips

Safety At Home has some great Halloween Safety Tips that I want to share with you.

pumpkin1

Don’t Frankenstein Your Lights
When purchasing electrical decorations, make sure to shop at a reputable retailer and look for the UL Mark. Be sure to check the rating on your extension cords and do not plug in more than the recommended wattage. Use special, heavy duty extension cords for high wattage decorations such as fog machines and electrically-powered inflatable decorations.

pumpkin2

Inspect Decorations with Fiendish Care
Inspect all of your electric lights and decorations for damage or wear. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections may pose a fire or shock hazard. Replace damaged light strings with energy-efficient LED lights. Look for a red UL Mark to indicate that lights are certified for both indoor and outdoor use. A green UL mark indicates certification for indoor use only.

pumpkin3

Beware of Candles!
Candles, especially in a Jack O’Lantern, should be off the ground and out of children’s reach. Try battery-operated LED candles for an even safer option.

pumpkin4

Don’t Trip Up Your Goblins
Halloween costumes should allow full movement for your kids. Costumes that drag, constrict or drape pose a dangerous hazard, especially at night. Check to ensure that costumes don’t restrict your children’s vision, and instruct them to watch out for tripping hazards, such as cords.

pumpkin5

Say Boo! to Unsafe Costumes
Be sure to purchase or make costumes out of flame-resistant materials such as nylon or polyester as these specially marked fabrics will resist burning and extinguish quickly. Make sure your child knows to stop, drop and roll in case their costume catches fire.

pumpkin6

Be Safe and Bright
Choose costumes that are lighter in color and attach reflective materials to costumes. Make sure each child has a flashlight to help them see and be seen.

pumpkin7

Keep Hungry Monsters from Feeding
Never let your kids eat Halloween candy before you inspect it in the light at home. Even if you know your neighbors, you should always check to be safe and throw away open candy or anything that looks at all suspicious.

Funky Monkey Snacks A Healthy Alternative

Kids love Halloween! Parents on the other hand worry about all the unhealthy candy kids get as treats. As a parent I know just how much I dread Halloween candy. It's so unhealthy and packed full of sugar that I hate allowing my children to eat it. I found a great new treat that is not only healthy, but tastes as good as candy. It's called Funky Monkey Snacks and my kids love them!

Funky Monkey Snacks are freeze-dried fruit which allows nearly all the flavor and nutrients found in fresh fruit and it has a fun crunch to them that kids love. Parents love the fact that they are 100% real fruit, they are 100% fat free, they is no sugar added, gluten free, and peanut/nut free!

Funky Monkey Snacks comes in seven delicious flavors
.
  • Bananamon - Freeze-dried organic banana and organic acai
  • Carnaval Mix - Freeze dried organic pineapple, organic banana, apple, and papaya
  • Applemon - Freeze-dried apple and organic cinnamon
  • JiveALime - Freeze-dried organic pineapple and lime juice
  • Mango OJ -Freeze-dried mango and orange juice
  • Pink Pineapple -Freeze-dried organic pineapple and guava
  • Purple Funk - Freeze-dried organic banana and organic acai

  • When my children first tried Funky Monkey Snacks I told them I had some dried fruit for them to try. They tried them and said to me that it wasn't dried fruit it was candy. Funky Monkey Snacks tastes so good they taste like candy. My daughter compared them to the gummy candy she loves so much and even said she preferred the Funky Monkey Snacks to the candy!

If you're looking for a healthy snack to give away this Halloween or simply looking for a healthy snack for your kids then Funky Monkey Snacks are the perfect solution!

Funky Monkey Snacks are sold at many retail locations and from their website.

5 Huge Mistakes to Avoid When Planning a Bar Mitzvah

A bar mitzvah celebration is an important moment for your family, your child, and all of your friends. Planning a fun, exciting bar mitzvah doesn’t have to be hard. You just need to avoid these 5 common mistakes.

Mistake #1: Choosing an inconvenient setting
Location is everything. If you choose a location that’s too far out of the way or that’s not conducive to hosting a party (e.g. a home with small rooms), the people you invite won’t want to come or the ones who do show up will be unhappy.

Mistake#2: Waiting until the last minute to invite guests
People are busy. Their worlds don’t revolve around you and your bar mitzvah. If you wait until the last minute to plan your party and invite all the guests, you’re going to be disappointed when a lot of people simply can’t make it. Finalize your dates well ahead of time so that you can get a head start on inviting guests and send out bar mitzvah announcements, allowing them to clear their schedules for your celebration.

Mistake #3: Not adding anything new or exciting to the party
Let’s face it—most bar mitzvahs are the same. The same activities, the same venue, the same meal…it all gets very old, very fast. Don’t be afraid to shake things up a little bit. Put your family’s stamp on the party to make it something uniquely yours. Include plenty of different activities for your guests to take part in, and let your creativity shine. Your guests will appreciate it.

Mistake #4: Making the party drag on too long
Which party would you rather attend: one that last about 3 hours but is packed with good times or one that drags on for 6 hours with dead time and insufferable boredom? Easy choice, right? Don’t make your bar mitzvah drag on and on. Pace the meal and the activities in such a way that there’s always something fun and exciting going on. The idea is to leave your guests wanting more, not to make them complain on the car ride home that they wished they had left 3 hours ago.

Mistake #5: Spending too much money
Spending a lot of money on party planning isn’t the way to ensure a memorable bar mitzvah. It doesn’t have to cost a lot for you to have a great party. A little creative planning can go a long way to making your party one that guests will always remember. Just try to create a comfortable, exciting atmosphere that encourages mingling and participation in fun activities, and your bar mitzvah will be great!

What are some other common bar mitzvah planning mistakes you’ve seen? Share your thoughts by leaving a comment.

A Nine Year Old With a Cell Phone

The other day when I was shopping at the mall for some gingham and I saw the most peculiar thing. In the aisle over, which contained the muslin, I overheard a nine year old having an intricately articulate conversation to her self. I took a step away from my fabrics to see what was going on and noticed that she was actually gabbing away with one of her friends on a cell phone.

The first thing I wanted to know about this little girl was who she was talking to. How many possible contacts could a third grader have stored in her smartphone? Is she also using it to send out tweets and check her Facebook status updates? The kind of questions that enter the mind are endless. After I bought a Bedazzler to spruce up my new fabric, I started to think that it might be a good idea to give kids cellphones.

If you are upgrading your current phone plan and want to purchase a new HTC Android phone, it makes sense to give your child a means of reaching you at all times. They can start practicing for when they are older and receive new and better models.

A cell phone can be an excellent device in case of emergency. I remember watching an episode of The Simpsons where Homer left his son Bart at soccer practice, who ended up turning to the Big Brother program for a "real" father. If you are worried about a scenario like this actually panning out, you can equiip your child with his or her very own smartphone.

In the education world, it seems like having a device that makes sounds, flashes, and pretty light up patterns would be a deterrent towards proper education. But quite the opposite is true. In fact there have been studies that claim students who use smartphones can actually become smarter.

There are app developers who specialize in creating games and programs that help children spell, perform math functions ,and learn about history. Children spend up to 7.5 hours a day consuming media from a variety of sources. Multitasking is an essential responsibility for every adult in this country and smartphones will help to develop the mind of your own child.

The next time I see a child with a smartphone I'm going to chock it up to good parenting instead of wandering around bewildered. Look into a prepaid phone that can only have access to a few certain numbers and equip it with purchasing restrictions and a daily use limit. Technology has come a long way ever since I was just a kid playing with a stick in the dirt.

Telus Goes Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness- The Pink Network

October is national Breast Cancer Awareness month and the wonderful people at Telus has gone PINK to help promote breast cancer awareness. Telus has been committed to help raise money for breast cancer awareness and last year they helped to raised $2.45 million nationally. This year they want to raise even more and you can help. TELUS will donate $25 to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for every pink BlackBerry Curve 9360 sold during the month of October. They are also donating $1 for every Facebook user who uses their Facebook page.

Approximately 23,200 Canadian women and 180 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. This is a distressing number of people who may have to wait the typical 33 days from first noticing a lump to learning if they have breast cancer. Access to digital mammography machines helps to lower the wait time between testing and diagnosis, and in some facilities the process can be done in one day.

I know the effects breast cancer can have. Seven years ago my mother-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer. After treatment and a double mastectomy she's doing great, but it was a long difficult and painful process. You can help raise awareness for breast cancer by purchasing a pink BlackBerry Curve 9360 sold during the month of October from Telus and by visiting their Facebook page.

Thank you to the wonderful people at Telus for all their hard work and generosity in the fight against breast cancer. Not only are they donating $25 to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for every pink BlackBerry Curve 9360 sold during the month of October and $1 for every Facebook user who uses their Facebook page, they are also donating $400 in my name to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for helping to promote this wonderful cause.

    Take A Spa Day

Part of being a mother means taking care of your children. We nurture them, we teach them, we feed them, cloth them, we take care of them when their sick, and so much more. We also take care of our homes and our husbands. Unfortunately we are so busy taking care of everything and everyone else that we often forget to take care of ourselves?

There is an old saying that states if Mom's not happy then no one is happy. That's true and in order to make Mom, yourself, happy you need to take care of yourself. You need to not only take care of your physical health, such as eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis, but you also need to take care of your mental health. Finding ways to relax and enjoying yourself is a great way to promote mental health and what's a better way to relax than spending a day at the spa?

A Spa day is a great way to not only pamper yourself, but they are also a great way to relax. You can get a facial, a pedicure, a manicure, a massage, and countless other treatments and at the end you will not only look fabulous, but you will feel fabulous and relaxed. When you look good you feel good and when it comes to feeling relaxed what's better than a massage?

A great way to make a spa day even better is to enjoy it with a friend. Christmas is coming up and if you're looking for a special gift for your sister, mother, or friend that shows them you care about them than consider giving them Vouchers for a day at the spa. You could even make it a girls day out and all go together. A great spa to go to is Sanctuary's spas and The Sanctuary's Christmas gifts selection includes great gift packages as well. Not only will you be relaxing, but you'll also be able to get some Christmas shopping done while you're there.

Taking care of yourself and treating yourself is important. You deserve a little you time and what better way to do that then having a spa day? Not only is it important for you to take care of yourself, but it's also important for your children for you to take care of yourself. Your children depend on you and a happy Mom makes happy kids
