This week's theme/prompt is HEADS - Rumor

As a mother of a teen aged girl in high school I know all about rumors and gossip and how it can hurt someones feelings. When my daughter first started high school she went from a small school that went from kindergarten to grade 8 where she knew every person in the school to a large high school where she only knew a couple dozen people. Her first year in high school was hard. She found out there are a lot of people who like to gossip and start rumors about other people. She would come home upset because someone said something about her or about one of her friends and couldn't understand why someone would do that. I sat her down and tried to explain to her that there are people in the world who try to make themselves feel and look better by putting other people down. She shouldn't let these people upset her because they are not worth it and it's just giving them what they want. I told her I was very proud of her for not being like those people and she should just ignore them. No matter what they say about her or any of her friends as long as she knows the truth that's all that matters.

What troubles me is that the parents of these kids sometimes start these things. That is where they learn it and why they think it is alright to do.

I wish you would have been my mom :)

Those are good words of advice, but it certainly is hard to deal with this, particularly at an age where peer pressure is so strong. Even if you feel pretty comfortable in your own skin, such critical comments can be hurtful.

I wish you would have been my mom too. I've dealt with nasty things like that with Micheyla and it helps her know she is a better person when she doesn't stoop to acting like the other person. Nice HoT Post.

I hate how mean kids can be. That's the same thing I always told my kids, too.

That's good advice, but damn isn't high school hard in that way?

Everyone is so insecure and trying to figure out who they are. New kids, or kids that don't fit in become targets of rumors and gossip.

I teach high school kids, and things haven't changed.

Good luck!

Good post, Tam. Rumors and gossip are evil, and I hope that Rora takes your advice, because she's a truly fantastic young woman!
