My blogging buddy Melinda was wondering about blog comments and how we respond to them and she asked the following questions.
1. How many blogs do you comment on each week? I have 91 blogs in my reader and I "try' to visit them everyday if they have a new post.
2. Do you comment on the same blogs routinely? See above answer
3. Do you comment just to comment are do you comment with the expectations that the blog owner will visit your blog as well? Ummm...I comment to let people know I was there and what I thought of their post. I hope they make a return visit.
4. How would you like the blog owner to respond to your comment, if at all? If they ask a question I email them the answer back if their email is shown, if not I answer them in my comments.
5. How many comments would you say you got (on average) in your last 5 posts? I usually get anywhere from single digits to the teens.
6. Do you respond to your comments? Yes.
7. How do you respond, within that post or via email or some other way? See answer to number 4.
8. [If you don't respond to comments] Why not? N/A.
I would be interested in seeing how you respond to these questions.

I think all my answers are the same as yours except I don't have 91 it's more like 20 or so that I go to daily. I try to visit a few new ones each week.
Ideally I would like to be able to comment on all my favourite blogs daily and to respond to all the comments I get but that's never going to happen until I retire from my real job! LOL
I comment when I feel I have something to say or if the person needs encoragement and if I don't comment I don't have anything to add. I think we all expect a comment once in a while just to know that someone is reading our blog.

I too agreed with most of your answers. I comment on some blogs that never come visit me ... but that's okay.
I only have 11 blog to visit (if they have new post). I only comment to the post that I think I really could make a good comment or share something appropriate to the contents of their posts. Often to the blogs I loved, I couldn't wait for their new posting :)
This is an interesting questionnaire … and perhaps I’ll do it on one of my blogs sometime soon … but like you I have LOTS of folks in my ‘reader’ (and a couple of Mega Feeds like Blog 365 and One Single Impression). I try to visit everyone, every day ... am most appreciative of folks who make the whole post available in the reader so I can read several at once if I fall behind. I’m much more likely to click in to leave a comment when I know I have something to share than just to see what might be there. I always respond in comments though occasionally I fall behind (as I’ve done recently) … and when email is available … I have something to say … and time permits, I respond that way too. I definitely leave more comments than I receive as a general rule. That said, I'm learning all the time and enjoying what I do in this 'virtual' world, so it's all good.

I have about 120 blogs in my reader right now - I have them separated up so that I only visit about a dozen a day. I get to each of them once a week. I'm still now sure if I like this system, but it's better than feeling the pressure of seeing hundreds of unread posts.
I try to respond to comments - usually within the comments, or I'll e-mail someone back if they ask a specific question. I don't respond as often as I would like though - I just don't have enough time.
wow, you have 91 blogs to visit everyday? I don't have that much, I only visit selected blogs and I comment each blog I visit too. Not because I want a return visit, but I comment because I read what they have to say. I don't really like people commenting just for the sake to leave a comment without even reading what I have to say.

people have took the time to visit your place, so whether you like their blog or not you should return the appreciation to them - always ;)
91 blogs?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I cannot imagine. I'm lucky enough to post on my blog every day. Many times I'm 1/2 comatose, trying to figure out what to write about, and Mark has already stumbled off to bed.
