High Cholesterol

I found out today that my 14 year old daughter has high cholesterol. Last year her cholesterol level was 5.1, which is border-line high, now it's a 7, which is high. The doctor said he has never had a 14 year old with such high cholesterol in his office before. For now, we are trying to lower her cholesterol level with diet, which she is so happy about (that was sarcasm). If that doesn't work then we have to try medicine to control it. With our family history of heart disease this is something that we definitely have to take serious. If I don't visit your today it's because I have so much stuff to read about trying to lower her cholesterol.

Geez. That is unusual. I know that control through diet is relatively effective. Let us know how it goes.

Some people just naturally have higher cholesterol. Their bodies don't break it down so easily.

If she has oatmeal daily (or as often as possible) it will help tons. It's best if it's the rolled oats. You can add fruit and all that.
It's tough that it's so high when she's so young. Hopefully she'll get into a routine of managing it.

That is bad news I hope your daughter can come to grips with the necessity of a change of diet.

also, fish oil capsules with Omega 3, 6 and 9 help.
I'm not sure how, but they do!

Heyyyyy that's odd. I was just thinking about Mist and then I'd have come over and thought about you.....so I skipped Mist and came right here, lol.

I'm sorry about this....I'm not familiar with all the ins and outs, but I do know this will be okay. ((hugs))

Hi Tammy, I'm so sorry to hear about this, but try not to worry. Let's just get busy. Try the low cholesterol brand of foods... uh, let's see... Oh it's Smart Balance. I started buying that after I was also told I had slightly high cholesterol. I would much rather modify my food then take medicine.

You probably are reading this already, but be careful of dairy foods. Also exercise helps. After that (take a deep breathe and do one thing at a time) visit your local health food store. Those folks are great with knowledge about natural alternatives!

Good luck... xoxoxo. I'm here for you... email me if you need to talk and I'll send my phone number.

My husband had his cholesterol checked in November, and it was pretty high. Since then he has been watching what he eats and exercising, and it went down a lot. I hope it works the same way for Aurora.

Wow, that's pretty high for such a youngster!

I hope she sticks with the necessary changes in her diet and it goes down as soon as possible!

Tell her the dietary change may also help the acne :)

I feel for your daughter..I too as a teenager had high cholesterol..it is genetic in my family. Besides changing my diet, I've found that regular exercise helps too. Good luck! I've enjoyed your blog, I found it on 5minutes for mom.
